I always try to make sure my heroine's have friends ( or at least one good buddy). In real life, I've learned to be careful around women who don't have friends. I hope that doesn't sound mean, but I've been burned too many times. I don't want anyone to be suspicious of my heroine because she can't get along with the other girls. :-) I write a lot about sisters who are friends because that's true to my real life experience as well.

I have two friends who were dear to me in high school with whom I'd love to reconnect. Unfortunately, neither wants to. One has a teenage son and is too busy for me, the other claims she doesn't want me to see her so fat. Can you imagine? Maybe she remembers me 60 pounds ago, when I was a skinny teen, but I'm no svelte model myself. According to her (we've talked on the phone), she's grossly obese and embarrassed to have me see her. I miss her so much. I told her life is too short to waste feeling self-conscious. **sigh**

Oh, I guess I didn't mean 'friends' in the true sense from books. I was thinking of friends that you've liked that were depicted in books, movies, or shows. For instance, Rachel Gibson has been writing about four friends and I'm waiting for the book about the fourth friend to come out this month. I've enjoyed their interactions and the way they connect with each other.

My books were friends in that I could hide away with them and read when no one else was around. And, yes, my siblings are good friends of mine. We live a distance from each other but with cell phones and email, we can keep in contact pretty easily.

My husband of 47 years and my siblings are my best friends. We are all native residents of Houston, only one
of our brothers has lived in another state. We may not
see each other every day, but if a problem arises - we are there for each other. I've already talked to two of my sisters and my Honey by telephone today. My husband's sister is also a great friend, we email regularly. I've been a member of my high school graduation class' s reunion committee
for over 30 years. Through this committee, I' ve been able
to stay in touch with countless numbers of friends from
high school. We have friends in the community and in
our church that we have known for 25 -30 years. Though
I love reading and have lots of keeper books, I' ve never
actually befriended any of the "characters."

Thanks, Barbara, for sharing. Like you, I've reconnected with a childhood friend. We don't see each other often but when we do, it's as if no time has passed. We laugh about the same things and really have fun being with each other.

And, yes, books have often been my best friends! I just picked up a favorite book I hadn't read in years - someone mentioned the title at a workshop I attended and I decided to read it again.

Your comments really hit a chord, Tessa. Good friends are SO important. I've lost contact with some after one of us has moved just as you described. One of my dearest friends died young several years ago and I still miss her.

Perhaps one of the best surprises is to 'rediscover' an old friend. I've recently reconnected with my best friend from high school and it's been great. After graduation I went to college, she married and moved states away and we just drifted apart.

But we have found that even though our lives went in totally different directions for so long, we still had that instant trust in each other and it felt as if we'd never been out of touch.

And--some of my best friends through the years have been books. One or two favorites have made numerous moves with me. There's nothing more comforting late on a dark, lonely night in a new town and a new job than a book you know and love. (OK, that's really strange but, hey, it was too late to call anyone to commiserate. *s* )

Good friends are priceless. I treasure mine.
Thanks for reminding me of just how much.

For me fun can be some quiet reading time, going out to a movie or restaurant, a family trip or a day spent with friends or family.

I had to laugh after reading my previous comment - I'm such
a night owl, that I forget that there are people who do sleep
at night! Everyone had probably headed off to bed by the time
I entered the comment!

A long time ago, (longer than I care to confess) someone gave me a Random House Dictionary, unabridged. This dictionary has often provided alternate definitions for words, lending meaning that might be described as out of the mainstream, an idea that always appealed to me.

I'm sorry to say that "fun" in the RH dictionary isn't much different from fun in your dictionary, Lois. Be that as it may, I'll take the def of fun to be something enjoyable, and, though it may sound a little odd, I've always enjoyed listening to the sound of a ticking clock. I suspect that as a child, I slept with my hand tucked near my ear, wearing a watch on my wrist, so that the ticking put me to sleep.

Since one ticking clock is enjoyable, many should be...?

I have a wall of clocks, I believe I'm approaching 100, the ticking loud enough to be heard in the next room. It's time-consuming when Daylight Savings comes and goes, but then I have all that time on my hands, or, more specifically, on my walls.
