Summertime, and the living is easy. Or at least, so we hope. We long for lazy days at the beach, around the pool, in a hammock under a shady tree. Preferably with a very hot “pool boy” bringing us tall, icy, alcoholic drinks. And, of course, we want a good book in our hands. (If we can’t have the pool boy, that is [g].
At my website, I run an opinion poll contest each month. I always love reading the answers. On some topics, people tend to agree.
For example, when my book She’s on Top came out (with a plus-size heroine who finds a sexy guy who loves her curves), I asked if society pressures women to have “perfect” bodies, and the response was an overwhelming “yes”. But on other topics, there’s a lot of variation in the responses I get, and that’s the case with my July topic.
For July, in honor of summer, my question is, “What’s your favorite summer reading?”
Some people think summer’s a time for light reading, and others go for the heavy books they don’t have time to read during the rest of the year. Some like nonfiction, some like magazines, but the majority prefer novels. And those novels may be everything from horror to sweet romance to erotic romance. Some people like to re-read old favorites and some delight in buying new titles. Some readers like long books and some prefer shorter reads. Here’s one of my favorite responses to date: “I love reading erotica in the summer since it makes a reader feel even warmer. I also like anthologies because after each short story I know it’s time to put on more sunscreen.” Who needs a timer, if you have an erotic romance novella? LOL.
So, how about you? What do you like to read in the summer? And, while you’re at it, where do you like to read, and what’s your taste in pool boys and summer beverages?
Oh, and please hop on over to my website and enter my contest as well (http://www.susanlyons.ca). You could win an autographed copy of one of my books plus a sequined turquoise scarf, just perfect for draping those bare summer shoulders!

Interesting question. For me, I just end up reading more of the books I like to read. I love romances with a twist of mystery and some comedy thrown in. I’m a big fan of Jennifer Crusie and wish she’d write a new book. I’ve been checking out all of the books by the ladies at Killer Fiction this summer, and loving them, especially Christie Craig. Her Weddings Can be Murder was a hoot!

My reading habits don’t change during the summer, I just keep reading as I normally do. Though this summer I’m trying not to buy anything new all summer and just clear out some of my TBR pile (which at last count was about 100 books). My TBR pile contains a little bit of everything – nonfiction, romance, mysteries (cozy and otherwise), fantasy, and sci-fi.
My pool boys – preferably dark haired with light eyes.
My summer drink – while I’m partial to sangria or a good margarita… since I can’t drink till sometime next year (pregnant this summer), I’m always up for nice tall glass of icy lemonade.

I usually read a lot more fiction than non-fiction, but I’ve got a great NF on the go right now.
“Bonk: The curious coupling of science and sex” is a fascinating and remarkably funny account of scientific studies of sex through recent history – beginning in the late 1800s, but mostly focusing on the 20th century as far as I’ve gotten.
Author Mary Roach combines a lot of research into the research – and researchers – with a wonderful sense of humour.
Not my typical beach read and definitely worth a look!
July 23, 2008 at 10:56 am
My answer is Yes. As in I’m a self-professed reading whore and will read just about everything in any season
In other words, my habits don’t change either. However, when I’m on a deadline I try not to pick up my favorites that will suck me in and I won’t be able to put them down!! Which is usually any of the Aphrodisia books, JR Ward or Cheyenne McCray.
As for drinks – butterscotch martinis baby! And pool boys, YES

My choice of books doesn’t change in the summer. I read romances and mysteries and I enjoy them both all year long. In the summer I love to relax on my back porch with a good book and a cool drink.
July 23, 2008 at 11:15 am
Lots of good stuff out there this summer. Of course, if I read everything I wanted my butt would be the size of the super dome. Talk about expanding assets! Overflowing the porch rocker, a favorite reading site, isn’t a worthwhile ambition. Kim Killion’s new book kept me sane while my sweetheart was in the hospital, and Linnea Sinclair gave me a good sci-fi romance to read aloud, keeping his mind occupied when the pain meds weren’t quite working. There really is something for every taste regardless of gender.

It’s interesting that so many people read the same things in summer as they do during the rest of the year. I’ve heard the term “beach reads” for so long – and the stores certainly advertise books as beach reads – but maybe that concept isn’t particularly relevant, at least to people like us who are addicted to books and read all year long! We just long for a holiday so we can read MORE!
Samantha, I’m with you on the “to be read” pile. That’s one of my goals for the summer. And a nice pitcher of sangria – or even lemonade – makes a great accompaniment.
Rachel, the “Bonk” book sounds fascinating.
And isn’t humor always welcome? – whether it’s in a research book, a mystery, or a romance? There’s definitely an art to writing humor so readers relate to it and aren’t put off. It can’t be too slapstick, or too mean, etc. etc.

I enjoy reading romantic suspense, mysteries and family sagas all year long. They keep me riveted and are my favorites. At the beach, in the backyard or in the house. My summer drink is a cool and refreshing spritzer.
July 23, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Susan…interesting comments here about not changing our reading habits. Mine don’t change either.
About the “beach reads”. My thought is that using that term gives people who “read serious literature” aka “important books” (see an eye roll here), permission to relax and enjoy a lighter read: i.e. something they normally view as “frivolous”.
What I can’t figure out is why those readers need permission from some marketing campaign to relax? and to simply enjoy something for sheer pleasure.
Makes them a little uptight imo.
My thoughts…worth nothing, but they’re mine.

Hi, Susan!
Me, I like my cabana boys young and dark and flirty, and I want them to bring me a gorgeous tequila sunrise. I’ve been reading so much nonfic lately I’m *totally* excited about reading Emily Bryan’s PLEASURING THE PIRATE (yeah, I like pirates even more than cabana boys!) for the sheer fun of it. I’m also looking forward to Joe Hill’s HEART-SHAPED BOX because it was so highly recommended on the Novelists, Inc. loop this past week. I haven’t treated myself to a good scare in a long time!
But for me, the real treat isn’t so much what I read as that I DO read…because, shame on me, I haven’t taken nearly enough time lately to immerse myself in the pleasure of getting lost in someone else’s story. And if I don’t do that soon, summer will be over!

Bonnie, having grown up with a mom who was a bit into the whole “Protestant work ethic” thing (and no, she wasn’t even Protestant!), I can relate to people thinking they need permission to do something frivolous. But I will say, in my house, reading was never considered frivolous, even if it was only Nancy Drew or Trixie Belden. Thank heavens!! If I had a book in my hand, I wasn’t considered to be wasting time. And believe me, I’ve clung to that philosophy all my life!
July 23, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Sue, I can’t imagine a “pool boy” bringing me a summer drink but my dear husband makes a mean gin and tonic.About summer reading. It’s no different from my winter reading. I always have two books on the go. I read one in bed before dropping off to sleep and one in our garden room (view of garden through a sliding glass door) Erotica at bedtime? Good for young lusty folks but I will pass on this one. I come from a family of readers. My mother was a writer and my grandmother wrote great letters when I lived away from home.
July 23, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Hi Susan,
I love spending my free time reading romantic suspenses and paranormals. Erotic romance is great during the summer because you can cool down with the AC.
July 23, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I read whatever I am in the mood for throught out the year. I don’t change habits in the summer time.
July 23, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Charlotte, Charlotte, Charlotte – bad girl!! You always must make time to read. Repeat after me: “From now on I’m giving up housework and chores, and I’m going to read instead” [g].
Anita, it’s so nice to have a hubby who’s useful – especially at making a good drink. I often try to have 2 books on the go at the same time, but sometimes it doesn’t work so well for me. I get so caught up in a story, I want to read through to the end, not dive into a different story.
July 23, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Jane, for the AC thing to work, you’d actually have to live in a climate where it’s common [g]. Up here in temperate Vancouver, BC, AC is really rare (except in high-rise office buildings).
July 23, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Susan, today is definitely not a day that requires AC here in Vancouver. The weather better clear up for the fireworks tonight. I hope you make the time to catch the show. Tonight it’s Canada and their extravaganza is Godzilla-themed. Godzilla Attacks English Bay on July 23 (that’s one of the headline I found when I googled it – LOL)
Beach reads! The only time I’m on the beach is during the four days of fireworks. I found it really hard to focus on a book with so many people moving about, with the changing light, the heat, the stickiness . . . So I’m not sure why “beach reads” is a well used term. I hate reading on the beach.
Habits don’t change with the season for me. I like to read in bed at night for different reasons in different seasons. And I choose books to read depending on mood regardless of what publishers are marketing. If I can’t find what I like in the stores I dig into my TBR pile or resort to old favorites.
My fav summer drink is Starbuck’s Coffee Frappuccino
July 23, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Hi Susan ,
I am enjoying my summer reading with romance time travel and paranormals, I love sweet iced tea to help cool the hot days and reading on my porch swing.
July 23, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Sue A., I was just wandering around downtown Vancouver and it’s warming up. Still a little overcast but hopefully the clouds will clear away by fireworks time. The Godzilla theme sounds pretty weird – I’m trying to imagine what Godzilla fireworks are going to be like. Will definitely have to go check it out!
Dina, the porch swing sounds lovely. Wish I had one!
Want to hear about one of my favorite summer drinks? Sploosh some fresh-squeezed orange juice and some pineapple juice into a blender, toss in some Amaretto liqueur and some Breyer’s natural vanilla ice cream (quantities of everything depend on your personal taste), an ice cube or two, and blend until smooth and creamy. If you want it boozier, toss in some rum or vodka [g].
And that reminds me, I really should mention last summer’s Awesome Foursome martini contest. The three winning recipes are on my website at http://www.susanlyons.ca/articles/awesome_martinis.htm. We sure had a lot of fun tasting the finalists!
July 23, 2008 at 8:25 pm
My reading depends upon what I am doing. If I am at the beach or pool, then I like to read magazines because I don’t need to concentrate as hard. If I am at home, then I read romantic comedies or mysteries (same as during the year but more emphasis on the romantic comedies.
My favorite summer drink is Starbucks Coffee Frappaccino (from the store) or a Pina Colada.
July 23, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Love the post, Susan!
I go for light reads in the summer. Rom coms, light mysteries, etc. And, okay, the truth is I’ll read anything at anytime, but I prefer the darker stories on a stormy night.
Fav summer drink? Ice water, sweet tea or my Starbucks regular.
Light,
Nancy Haddock
July 24, 2008 at 12:49 am
I see lots of people are plugging Starbucks!
And you know, it’s so nice to see people mentioning romantic comedies. Publishers haven’t been buying many of those lately, yet I know lots of people who like to read them (including myself). We can’t read heavy stuff all the time – it’s just too intense. I think there’s nothing so relaxing when you’re tired and stressed as a good rom com.
July 24, 2008 at 7:40 am
I devoured three books recently, “Sweet Talk” by Susan Mallery, “Hide” by Lisa Gardner, and “Lifelines” by C.J. Lyons. Now I’m savoring “The Whistling Season” by Ivan Doig. I have to put limits to my reading, of course, or I’d never get any writing done.
The four books I listed each reminded me of aspects of writing that I love.
I’m planning to read “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen next.
Now, back to my previously schedule work!

July 24, 2008 at 11:04 am
That’s a nice variety, Lynnette.
Inspired by all this chat, I’m now going through my to-be-read shelf. So many good books and so little time!
I really should make a rule that I can’t buy any more until I finish these, but I’ll never have that kind of discipline.
July 24, 2008 at 11:38 am
many hot of books. love reading stories that take place at the beach, many anthying from taht TBR files lol. enjoy you summer.
July 25, 2008 at 12:29 pm
I agree that there are alot of great books here. In the summer, I like to read books that are light, funny and easy to read.
