I love to watch CBS Sunday Morning and today, being the last Sunday of 2007 was no exception. I enjoy the lighter side of the news. The other side can be, well, depressing.
The show got me thinking about stories that inspired me to have light happy thoughts. So, I sat at my computer, went to YouTube and searched for Paul Potts.
There he was, standing in front of his judges on Britain’s Got Talent, this car phone salesman with crooked teeth and a shy, don’t-eat-me-alive expression. He was clearly nervous, feeling vulnerable.
The judges sat with doubting eyes and bored faces, waiting for this guy’s turn to end.
And then, Paul Potts sang.
During the song, the camera panned through the audience, zeroed in on the judges’ surprised faces, showed tears, a standing ovation of such sudden appreciation, it blew me away…again. No matter how many times I see this clip, I glow inside for this shy, kinda pudgy guy who never sang outside his home before.
We know what’s happened with Paul Potts since that contest…he’s world famous, a voice and talent to be reckoned with.
It isn’t often we get to witness something like this, a person’s talent exploding, carrying him along to a new life and all that comes with it. It was extraordinary and reminds me that wonderful things happen to ordinary people every day. (not quite like this, but still….)
On the writing front for me, was the release of 3 romances, all of which received 4 stars from RT. Which completely blew me away. This trend is continuing, happily, with another 4 star review for my next release, THIGH HIGH .
But still, even these personal successes pale in comparison to stories like Paul Potts’. I’m not even sure if the contest in which he was discovered happened in 2007. Doesn’t really matter, because his success transcends a single year…he’s probably the musical discovery of the decade.
So, I’m wondering what stories of 2007 have you found particularly uplifting?

Hi, Bonnie
I checked out the video on Paul Potts on YouTube and WOW, that was amazing. It brought tears to my eyes.
Congrats on all your great reviews and I’m really look forward to reading Thigh High *bg*
As for uplifting stories… well, my uncle, Oziel, was in the newspaper on Christmas day for the work he does with kids in wheelchairs… I think you can see the video or read the article here:

I think the most uplifting story I’ve heard this year was about the principal who donated a kidney to one of her students.

There are uplifting stories all over the place. The problem is, you have to wade through the muck and mire of all the depressing stories of war, murder and mayhem to notice the good stuff.
Today I read about a homeless man who jumped into a canal to rescue a woman who was drowning.
I watched something on You Tube yesterday where lions caught a baby buffalo and were in the process of killing it, when the herd of adult buffalo all came to its rescue. Just when you thought the little guy was dead meat, he got up and walked away. Sure, the lions have to eat, but on this day one got away, and that was uplifting to see.
There’s countless stories about people rescuing animals and animals rescuing people. Each & every one of them are uplifting.
The soldier who returned from Iraq and showed up unannounced at his small son’s classroom was uplifting to the point of tears.
You can find uplifting stories even in natural disasters when people come together to rebuild communities and lives.

The baby water buffalo! Yes! I saw that sometime ago (I don’t really surf YouTube – these get forwarded and some I can’t resist) it was an amazing piece of footage.
There are an incredible number of great stories out there…but it does mean mining for them sometimes.
cheers!

Although Donald Duck could sing Nessun Dorma and I’d be moved to tears, I must say that the Paul Potts video was truly inspirational. Here’s to the average guy with extraordinary talent.
